Harley-Davidson will open India's first plant outside the U.S.

Famous American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson plans to open a full-fledged Indian plant to produce its products - the first outside the U.S..


Initially, the U.S. side had planned to establish in India SKD their motorcycles, but now the plans have changed, and the agenda is already on version with a 60-percent localization of production.

Harley-Davidson Inc. began selling its products in India in 2010 and the second half sold slightly less than 250 motorcycles.

The price of the cheapest model Harley Superflow in the Indian market of 550 thousand rupees (around 12,000 dollars).

Managers Harley-Davidson expects that after the transfer of production to India this bike will become cheaper by 40-45%. "The company has asked its international suppliers from the USA and Thailand, to organize production in bavalite (Haryana, India). A potential Indian suppliers invited to become partners in the supply of parts for bikes on the new plant. According to preliminary calculations, the new plant should start operating this summer.
